COVID-19 has increased demands to remain connected to technologies, but with its greater hold over our lives, many feel more disconnected than ever.
Not long ago, I used technologies to exist everywhere simultaneously and in parallel. Founding a tech start-up, working remotely and adjusting to COVID-19 was my excuse to always remain online and available. I believed somehow that if I continually mastered and introduced more technologies into my life, I could infinitely do more. I was told, or more rightly, sold, to believe that this would help me become a better person, be a better friend, build a better business, and be able to reach my goals faster. After suffering burnout and falling ill, I realised the more I sought answers through technologies, the further away I became from myself. But now, after two years of gradual breaks from – and intentional use of – technology, I pronounce myself a recovering ‘technoholic’. I began my recovery by understanding how I was using technology, the toxic beliefs I held, and the automated behaviours it enabled.
