Can you believe there have been over 50 ResponsAbility articles published? šThatās a whole lot of writing, and hopefully a lot of value delivered to you! š
But Iād like to know for sure. There are exciting changes coming and I want you to be a part of shaping them. *Please take this 5-minute survey to let me know how. šš»*
Fear can be a very effective and valuable emotion. But we often have a lot more of it than we need. It certainly feels like there is more fear these days- whether youāre fear-response is a result of the stock markets, climate change, job security, or costs of living. This shows up for me more often than I care to admit, especially with the volume of information we process at Safe & the City. Itās a heavy load to carry and can be more insidious and hold you back if youāre not able to recognise all its forms. If we donāt face our fears, the cycles repeat with new circumstances, places and people. Ultimately, we remain stuck.
Who Iām Learning From
Thank you to Justin Michael Williams for sharing the 7-Types of Fear on his Insight Timer course (highly recommended āļø). Here are the coles notes summary:
Real Fear- the one that is the fight or flight with good reason
Echo-Fear- the real fear that follows you from the past, direct or indirect experiences
Indecisiveness - the fear of not making the right choice so remaining in a state of limbo, often building pressure as a decision will be made
Conspiracy - the fear that āthe world is against meā and holding you back but out of your control
Perfectionism - The fear of trying; āIf I canāt do it right, I canāt do it at allā
Ā Saboteur- The fear of the voice in your head that always says you canāt, arenāt good enough, reminds you of shortcomings
Distraction - Using something else to delay or avoid whatās in front of you because of fear.
Recognising these different shapes of fear and how it shows up in more ways than I thought in my life. While knowing isnāt a ācureā of fear, it changes the influence it has over me and knowing what direction I need to head towards. Do these types of fears resonate with you? Are there any missing?
Quote Iām Pondering
āWould you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
āThat depends a good deal on where you want to get to,ā said the Cat.
āI donāt much care whereā¦ā said Alice.
āThen it doesnāt matter which way you go,ā said the Cat.
-Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland
Turning Learning into Action
Overcoming the fear of āI canāt do it againā has kept me moving forward. Iāll be running the Scottish Half Marathon on September 18th! Iām proud to share Iāve raised nearly 150% of my target for Cancer Research UK in honour of my mother. Thereās still time if youād like to donate for those pavement-pounding hours Iāve put in to cross the line.
Donāt forget to complete this short survey to share how youād like ResponsAbility to evolve. šš»
Thatās it from me for now.
Bye bye šš»šš»
